Using directories has always been an important part of boosting SEO. In the past, listing your website on directories could have been all that was needed to optimise your website for search engine rankings.
Today, however, things are a little different.
The algorithms of Google and other search engines have adapted to place less value on directory listings. So while these still feature as a core component of just about any comprehensive SEO strategy, you should never rely solely on directories to get your website onto page one. Make no mistake; you can still use directories to get an edge on your competitors… but you have to be smart about it. Here’s how.
Be Selective
Previously, the majority of SEO strategies concentrated on getting the targeted website onto as many directories as possible. And yes, this worked – in the past. Now, more than ever, quality beats quantity. Search engines often penalise websites that appear on an unrealistic number of directories, especially if those directories are known for being poor quality.
To ensure your directory listings are benefitting your SEO rather than harming it, you should be careful to list your website on directories that:
- Have strong reputations
- Match the location of your business
- Are relevant to your company and industry.
- When possible, seek out niche directories that align with your business rather than aiming for broad or unrelated directories. For example, if you were a Gold Coast electrician, a listing on a trades directory in South East Queensland would be far more valuable than five listings on general, non-location-based directories.
- Work on Your Website First
The modern, high-quality directories you should be looking for will typically be monitored and edited by a person. This means getting accepted by these directories depends heavily on one thing: your website being accessible to people. If the directory manager can visit your website and easily read and navigate through all your pages, they should have no hesitation in listing your business.
If your current website looks cluttered, outdated, or unprofessional, it is essential you give it a makeover before approaching the directories that could be the key to improving your SEO.
